Practicing Sight Words at Home
Sight words are words that readers instantly recognize without having to figure them out or solve them. Sight words often do not follow traditional phonics rules and have to be memorized. Acquiring sight words is a skills that is necessary for beginning readers to become fluent readers.
If your child is a beginning reader (typically in kindergarten-1st grade), he/she may receive sight words to practice and learn from his/her classroom teacher or reading teacher. These words can often be successfully learned by practicing them as flashcards, though children often enjoy practicing their sight words through hands on activities and games.
